Udyam registration is free, takes minutes, and unlocks collateral-free loans, subsidies, tender preference and protection against delayed payments. Here is the full picture.

Of all the registrations available to a small Indian business, Udyam (MSME) registration offers perhaps the best return on effort: it is free on the government portal, can be completed quickly with Aadhaar and PAN, and unlocks a genuinely useful set of financial and legal benefits. Yet many eligible businesses never register. Here is what you are missing.

What is MSME / Udyam registration?

"MSME" stands for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. The government’s recognition for these enterprises is called Udyam Registration, filed on the official Udyam portal. On registration you receive a permanent Udyam Registration Number and an e-certificate.

Who qualifies — the classification

Enterprises are classified as Micro, Small or Medium based on a combined investment and turnover criterion:

  • Micro — investment up to ₹1 crore and turnover up to ₹5 crore.
  • Small — investment up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹50 crore.
  • Medium — investment up to ₹50 crore and turnover up to ₹250 crore.

The benefits that actually matter

  • Collateral-free loans — access to credit under government credit-guarantee schemes.
  • Protection against delayed payments — buyers must pay MSMEs within a statutory period, with interest on delay.
  • Tender preference — many government tenders are reserved for, or give preference to, MSMEs.
  • Subsidies and concessions — interest subvention, subsidies on certifications (including ISO), and various state incentives.
  • Easier approvals — smoother access to licences, registrations and government schemes.

How to apply

  1. Keep your Aadhaar (of the proprietor/authorised signatory) and the business PAN ready.
  2. Visit the official Udyam Registration portal and enter the details.
  3. Classify the enterprise correctly as Micro, Small or Medium.
  4. Submit — there is no government fee — and receive your Udyam Registration Number and certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a government fee for Udyam registration?

No. Udyam registration on the official government portal is free. Any charge is only for professional assistance, not a government fee.

Who can register under Udyam?

Any micro, small or medium enterprise — proprietorship, partnership, LLP or company, in manufacturing or services — within the investment and turnover limits.

What is the biggest benefit of MSME registration?

For most small businesses it is access to collateral-free credit and the statutory protection against delayed payments by buyers.
